Dan Gilbert pledges $1B toward Renaissance Center and East Riverfront redevelopment

A proposed $2.2 billion transformation of Detroit’s Renaissance Center and east riverfront gained a major boost with a $1 billion commitment from Dan Gilbert.

Dan Gilbert has pledged approximately $1 billion in development capital toward a new nonprofit that would redevelop, own, and operate the Renaissance Center and surrounding East Riverfront district. The broader plan covers roughly 35 acres and calls for a reworked Renaissance Center, 18 acres of publicly accessible civic space, affordable housing, space for Detroit-based small businesses, and year-round attractions. Project backers estimate the work could support more than 8,000 local construction jobs and thousands of permanent jobs. Why it matters for local businesses: A large-scale riverfront destination could reshape foot traffic, tourism, hiring, and commercial opportunities across downtown and nearby neighborhoods. The proposal still faces public review and City Council consideration.
